“If I play good cricket, I don’t need PR” – MS Dhoni explains his low social media presence

Former India captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon MS Dhoni has revealed why he maintains a low profile on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Known for his calm demeanor both on and off the field, the legendary cricketer explained that he prefers letting his performance do the talking rather than engaging in public relations (PR) activities.

Dhoni on Avoiding Social Media

Speaking in the latest episode of Tread Talks by Eurogrip Tyres, the 43-year-old shared his thoughts on staying away from social media:

“I have never been a big fan of Social Media. Throughout, I have had different managers. I started playing in 2004. Twitter (now X) almost got popular slightly later, then Instagram came. All the managers are like, ‘We should do some PR, build this, build that.’ So, I looked at all and told the same answer: if I play good cricket, I don’t need PR.

Dhoni’s philosophy reflects his belief in substance over hype, focusing on cricketing achievements rather than personal promotion.

Irony in Retirement Announcement

Despite his limited engagement with social media, Dhoni used the platform for one of the most emotional announcements of his career. In 2020, he posted a short video on Instagram to announce his retirement from international cricket. The video was accompanied by the caption:

“Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me retired.”

The video chronicled key moments of his illustrious journey, making it a rare and memorable post from the cricketing legend.

MS Dhoni’s Upcoming IPL 2025 Campaign

Although Dhoni retired from international cricket, he continues to be an integral part of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

  • Retention: Ahead of IPL 2025, Dhoni has been retained by CSK for ₹4 crore under the tournament’s updated rules as an uncapped Indian player.
  • IPL Legacy: Dhoni is the most capped player in CSK’s history, with 258 matches, amassing 5,118 runs at an average of 39.06 and a strike rate of 139.45, including 23 half-centuries.
  • Achievements: Under his leadership, CSK has won five IPL titles, making him one of the most successful captains in the league’s history.

Dhoni’s Enduring Popularity

Despite his minimal social media activity, Dhoni remains one of the most beloved figures in world cricket. His humility, achievements, and unique approach to the game have earned him a fanbase that transcends generations.

As he prepares for another IPL season, the “Captain Cool” continues to inspire through his actions on the field rather than through digital promotions—a testament to his enduring legacy.
