India delivered a commanding performance in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka by 82 runs in their Group A fixture at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday, October 9. This victory not only helped India avenge their 2024 Asia Cup final loss but also boosted their net run-rate significantly, moving them to second place in the points table.

India, batting first for the first time in the tournament, built their innings methodically, with openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma forming a solid 98-run partnership. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur capitalized on the foundation, smashing her fastest T20I half-century to propel India to the highest total of the tournament so far, a daunting 173.

In response, Sri Lanka stumbled early, losing Vishmi Gunaratne to Renuka Singh for a duck in the first over. A surprise move to give Shreyanka Patil the new ball also paid dividends, as she dismissed Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. With Sri Lanka reeling at 6-3 in the third over, they could not recover and were bowled out for 90, handing India a much-needed boost in net run-rate.

Updated Points Table (Group A):

Position Team Played Won Lost NRR Points
1 Australia 3 3 0 +1.256 6
2 India 3 2 1 +0.576 4
3 Pakistan 3 2 1 +0.555 4
4 New Zealand 3 1 2 -0.789 2
5 Sri Lanka 3 0 3 -2.564 0

India’s Net Run-Rate Recovery: India’s net run-rate saw a massive improvement after this match, rising from -2.900 to +0.576. This jump was crucial in helping them leapfrog New Zealand and Pakistan to take second place, tied with Pakistan on points but ahead due to a superior net run-rate.

Sri Lanka’s Struggles: Sri Lanka, on the other hand, suffered their third consecutive loss, leaving them at the bottom of the table with zero points and a net run-rate of -2.564. They are now virtually out of contention for a semifinal spot.

India vs. Australia: A Crucial Clash Ahead Next up for India is a highly anticipated clash against defending champions Australia on Sunday, October 13, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. India has had success against Australia in the group stages of the 2018 and 2020 editions, making this a must-watch encounter.
